Greens Protection Policy

Our synthetic and grass greens are valuable assets that need to be protected from damage. The Greens Protection Policy outlines the rules regarding correct practices to protect both the synthetic and grass greens for all members and visitors to enjoy.

Rules

The following rules must be observed:

  • Smoking – not allowed on synthetic and grass greens, Club Designated areas only
  • Drinking – not allowed on synthetic and grass greens, Bank only
  • Eating – not allowed on synthetic green
  • Footwear – only approved Flat-Soled Shoes (see Bowls Australia website for list)
  • Dumping Bowls – not allowed on synthetic or grass green
  • Dropping Bowls – Please place bowls on greens and on the bank – do not drop

Delivery of Bowls

To avoid damage to the greens, bowlers need to deliver the bowl correctly. Dumping or dropping of bowls (from above 30cm (1 foot) can cause damage to the surface of the green. This will result in damage to the greens by denting the compacted material immediately below the green surface. Care must be taken to:

  • Roll the bowl, with the bowl not dropped from a height
  • Placing a bowl onto the green after being put on a bank
  • NOT drop bowls onto the greens when standing on the banks at the start of a game.

Strategies to deal with dumping include:

  • Changing techniques
  • Seek coaching
  • Have your technique captured on video and review technique options
  • Use a bowler’s stick to assist getting lower in your delivery
  • Use a Bowling Arm

TVBC value our members. Members who believe they may have an issue with their delivery should approach a coach to discuss how they can work together to remedy the situation.

Use of Artificial Devices

Bowls Australia has an Artificial Devices Policy that aligns to the Laws of the Sport of Bowls. The policy identifies wheelchairs, walking frames, and bowlers’ arms.

The following identifies wheelchairs and walking frames specifically and are extracts from the policy that describes how the devices must comply:

3. SPECIFICATIONS

3.1 Wheelchairs

3.1.1 The large and usually rear tires (pneumatic or soft rubber slicks), must have a minimum width of 45mm. Tires must be smooth “slicks” or inverted tread tires.

3.1.2 The most suitable tires for the small or front wheels are 200mm x 50mm with a pneumatic tire or
soft rubber “slicks”.

3.1.3 Castors, made of nylon or polyurethane are becoming increasingly popular and can also be used for front wheels. The recommended width of these should be a minimum of 75mm. It is a requirement that the edges, if sharp, must be rounded off.

3.1.4 If there are any doubts about tire tread, duct tape can be placed over the tire to provide a smoother surface as a temporary or precautionary measure.

4.1 Walking Frames

4.1.1 Walking frames can be used provided the frame does not cause damage to the green. To eliminate damage that may be caused to the green, the frame must comply with the following:

4.1.1.1 Preferably wheels of 45mm and pneumatic as applied to wheelchairs or wide wheels that are smooth and without tread.

4.1.1.2 If the frame has “feet”, each one must have its own base covered with rubber or similar material. The base should measure at least 76mm across.

4.1.2 Players are not to sit on their frames while on the green unless each “foot” and wheel complies with the specifications above.

Under the Bowls Australia Greens Policy, the controlling body or a deputised representative are able to warn people if they consider a player is causing damage to the green.

The TVBC Policy reflects the BA Policy and the importance of maintaining our greens for all members and guests, to advance the game of Lawn Bowls through proper maintenance and care.
